Kindness was on the menu for this week’s #GoalChatLive. My guests: Elise Marie Collins, Super Ager; Matthew J. Goldberg, Rings of Kindness; and Elizabeth McCumber, the Better without Pressure blog. Kindness is free (Elizabeth), kindness is cool (Matt), nature is kind (Elise).
The bottom line: When you take care of yourself, you feel good. And when you feel good, you are more likely to be good to others. Elise, Matt, and Elizabeth shared their takes on the value of kindness, as well as practices, activities, and more.
How to Be Kind to Yourself
- Elise: Breathe in loving kindness for yourself, then breathe it in for others
- Elizabeth: Split the day into quarters. If your day gets off to a rough start, you have three more parts of the day to enjoy. Etch a sketch when you need to
- Matt: Stop being so hard on yourself; give yourself a break
How to Be Kind to Others
- Elise: Look for opportunities – such as with the elderly – to practice patience and kindness
- Elizabeth: The next time you think of someone, text them
- Matt: Recognize that extending kindness, empathy, and love benefits the giver
Kindness #GoalChatLive
How They Take Care of Themselves
- Elise: Yoga, meditation, spa-like bed time routine. Have more than one thing. Also, start your day that way
- Matt: Walking my dog, listening to music, watching old sitcoms with my 9th grade son, and spending time with myself and my wife
- Elizabeth: I always get my steps in; 10,000 steps every day
Goals
- Elizabeth: Make a tada list: things you’ve done that are great
- Matt: Make a kindness todo list. Give yourself credit for the things you have done or would like to do.
- Elise: Make a menu of 5-10 things you can do to calm yourself before you go to sleep. And do them!
- Elise Bonus Goal: Be kind to someone who is vulnerable or looking for help
