Creating Content with Rob Kutner & Julie Riley

When it comes to creating content, there are plenty of avenues to explore: fiction, non-fiction, social media, video, podcasting, the list goes on and on. This week, author Rob Kutner, Snot Goblins & Other Tasteless Tales, and Julie Riley, social media manager at StreamYard, joined me on GoalChatLive to talk about the ups, down, and “tricks” to creating content.

Whether you are a writer, creative, or entrepreneur, it’s likely you have “multiple projects at various stages of development.” Diversification is important for any and all content endeavors.

Rob and Julie offered tips for creating content, as well as seeking out and embracing feedback. They also shared their thoughts on what stops people from turning their ideas into words. Julie: overwhelm; Rob: perfectionism.

How to Create Content

  • Julie: For social media, start with a big piece of content (like a live stream), then reimagine the parts into different formats. For instance, release the audio as a podcast, write a blog post, turn short clips into reels, etc.
  • Rob: Write bad stuff. Get the words out of your head, so you can revise and refine it.

Developing & Organizing Ideas

  • Rob: Takes a journaling approach to creative projects. He closes all devices and writes longhand to brainstorm.
  • Julie: Starts with titles and lists, brainstorms, and then organizes her ideas.
  • Rob: People get attached to ideas that have no place in certain projects. Some ideas are “not yets” or “never going to bes.” Trust you will keep coming up with new, good ideas.
  • Julie: Keeps an idea board, and divides them into three categories: idea, in progress, complete. Some ideas never leave. Others get explored and come back.

Goals

  • Julie: Define your audience – who they are, where they live. Then you can figure out what kind of content you want to create for them. Start with one big piece of content and turn them into little pieces.
  • Rob: You have something burning in your brain. Kick that further down the road. You’ll find out what it wants to be. Stay on the fun part as long as necessary.
  • Bonus: Gift yourself the time and permission to work on your ideas.

Final Thoughts

  • Julie: Get started.
  • Rob: Look at the long game.
  • All: Stop overthinking and have fun.
