Today’s #NewYearNewYou #Start2021Now Tip comes from Susan Valot, long-time public radio reporter and podcast host/producer in Los Angeles, as well as an adjunct professor.I met Susan several years ago, when she took one of my live goal-setting workshops. Susan recently guest-moderated the #BookCampPD Twitter chat on Your Goal Guide. Thank you, Susan. You can read the #BookCampPD November 29th recap here. Plus, she hosted a goal-setting workshop for The Society of Professional Journalists’ Freelance Community last spring. Video is below.
Biggest Win in 2020
Getting a radio station to agree that yes, radio folks fall under the “content creator” exemption of California’s anti-freelancer legislation, AB5, so I could do work for them again after being unable to do part of my freelance work for 9 months because of that law.
3 Big Goals for 2021
- Launch travel podcast after pandemic
- Expand into print science publications, possibly specializing in wildfire science
- Work toward becoming stronger/more fit
Motto for 2021
Get out there
Susan Valot’s Tip to #Start2021Now
If you don’t feel motivated to do something, use the Pomodoro technique of setting a timer. Work for 45 minutes straight and then take 15 minutes off to do whatever I want. This may mean closing any internet pages that may be distracting. (Ahem, Facebook!)

Do you use a timer? How does that work for you? Please share in the comments.
