Storytelling with Paul Chitlik & Terrie Silverman

On this week’s on GoalChat I did a deep dive into Storytelling with Paul Chitlik,  author of The Screenwriting Sensei, and Terrie Silverman, founder of Creative Rites. Paul is an award-winning television, film, novel writer, and educator. Terrie is a story and creativity coach, writer, and performer. Storytelling is all about listening, empathy, and communication.

Paul and Terrie talked about their passion for storytelling, along with their storytelling. They also shared practical – and inspirational – advice for those who want to do more writing and/or are ready to tap into their story.

How Storytelling Changes Your Life

  • Paul: The more you know about people, the more you know about yourself
  • Terrie: People connect with your stories
  • Terrie: The deeper we go, the more people can relate
  • Paul: The more specific you get, the better

Tips for Writing and Getting Unstuck

  • Terrie: Flow is a bonus. Always be writing
  • Terrie: For those who are stuck, look out the window and write about what you see. Or answer these questions: what do I think, how do I feel, what do I remember?
  • Paul: Have a goal and a place where you can write at peace. Or write I’ve got nothing to write over and over again until you latch onto what you want to write about
  • Paul: Set a word count for each day, whatever number makes sense from 200 to 2000 words
  • Terrie: All creativity counts
  • Paul: Exercise to get the creative juices flowing

Goals

  • Paul: Set writer goals: do you want to publish, write for film of TV. Set a goal. And then do it!
  • Terrie: Allow yourself to write messy, don’t worry about structure and editing while you are creating.
  • Terrie: Be curious. Tap into wtouches you, what makes you laugh, what fills you with awe and wonder.

Final Thoughts

  • Paul: Writers write. If you want to be a writer, write
  • Terrie: Fear and courage are intrinsic parts of the creative process; allow for both of them. Remember, everyone is born storyteller
