Every person – and every business – has a story. This week on #GoalChatLive I talked about storytelling with Jason Falls, Peter Markel, and Christy Smallwood. Jason is Executive VP, Marketing, CIPIO.ai, host of Winfluencer and Executive Producer of the Marketing Podcast Network (The DEB Show is on MPN); Peter is CEO at Somnu, Inc.; and Christy Smallwood, Chief Strategic Guide, Eagle Eye Strategies and host of the Small Business Success Talk Show.
Jason, Peter, and Christy share their takes on storytelling and examples of how storytelling has made an impact, as well as tips and storytelling goals.
What is Storytelling?
- Jason: Answering the question of why. Every story you tell informs your “why”
- Peter: Content creation. Giving others a look at your business through posts, photos, and videos
- Christy: When you tell a story it goes beyond sharing information. It’s impact
How to Hook Your Audience
- Jason: Every interaction with a story starts with a hook, encouraging people to learn more
- Peter: Content starts with “This is what we are going to tell you, but first we are going to share this …” It gets people to tune in until the end
- Christy: Be yourself completely
- Jason: Stir things up. Don’t be afraid to take a side, share your opinion. Own it!. Stand out and stand up
- Christy: Look at the objective behind what you are sharing
Storytelling #GoalChatLive
Goals
- Christy: Get index cards and start writing out the moments that matter. Get out of your head and get your story on the page
- Peter: Learn what Reels, Stories, and TikToks are. Visit Repurpose.io. Find a way to get your customers to tell your story along with you. For instance, ask them through posts or in your email signature, reach out directly, or put a ‘selfie station’ up in your store. Be sure to respond when people tag your business
- Jason: Map out a storyline for engaging people to share content/partner. Start with why clients care: UGC performs better
Final Thoughts
- Peter: The best thing you can do is just get started
- Jason: Remember the “therefore, but then” sequence
- Christy: Dare greatly and live your adventure
