Happiness with Dave Delaney and Julie Zaruba Fountaine

This week on #GoalChatLive, I talked about Happiness with Dave Delaney, founder of Futureforth and host of The Nice Podcast, and Julie Zaruba Fountaine, founder of EMPOWER Possible. Both are speakers, consultants, and motivators. Julie’s EMPOWER system takes into account “self. social networks, and systems,” while seeking fulfillment. Dave’s The Nice Method (which is business and leadership based) emphasizes active listening, life outside the walls of work, and avoiding the wrecks (dealing with communication breakdowns and fear).

According to Julie, happiness is the feeling you have when reaching your full potential. Dave says it’s when you feel a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction.

Dave and Julie shared their thoughts on happiness and their happy places, as well as a ton of resources and tips. At its core, happiness is about empowerment, choice, and authenticity.

How to Tap into Happiness

  • Julie: Examine how you show up in each area of your life and examine how it impacts other aspects
  • Dave: Know yourself, respect yourself, find your others/your community
  • Julie: Think about the Positivity Ratio: Have 5 to 7 positive events for every negative
  • Dave: It’s wrong to crave happiness all the time. Down times are about perspective, so you know what happiness is.

Goals

  • Julie Start a gratitude journal. Write down at least items 3 for at least 3 weeks, think about what you are grateful for, why, and what your life would be like without them.
  • Dave: Keep a list of the 3 MITs (Most Important Things) to do each day. Dave keeps his list color coded on a Google sheet on his home page. As you complete things, change the color to green, so you know it’s done. It will keep you on focused.

Final Thoughts

  • Dave When you think too much of the past, it can lead to depression. When you think too much of the future, it can lead to anxiety. Stay in the present
  • Julie: Anxiety is similar to excitement – reframe it!

Final, Final Thoughts

  • Julie: A happiness mindset is a muscle. Lean into it. Use it. And develop it!
  • Dave: Get out of dodge. Go climb a hill. Don’t let fear or cost scare you from traveling.
