This week’s conversation on Building Your Network featured guests Daniel Andrews, Cutting Edge Business Coaching; Claire E. Jones, author, speaker, and mentor; and event design consultant Robbie Samuels. Networking isn’t about meeting new people. It’s engaging in conversation, developing relationships, and following through. Daniel, Claire, and Robbie shared their takes on networking, along with anecdotes, tips, and action items for reframing your approach.
What is Networking?
- Robbie: His mantra is “I choose to live with abundance.” Networking is about abundance of thought/knowledge and supporting other people.
- Claire: The action of interacting with others to exchange info and develop contacts. It can literally happen anywhere people with shared interests convene.
- Daniel: Networking is NOT speed prospecting. It’s selling through the room, not selling to the room.
Networking Tips
- Claire: Networking starts with knowing your goal. What am I “selling?” What brand values are at play?
- Claire: Practice. Learn how to interpret small talk. Someone who skydives for fun is different than someone who knits for fun.
- Daniel: You can also pick things up from people’s LinkedIn profiles – read recommendations.
- Robbie: Draft the follow-up message before the event; start with the intention around who you want to meet. You are more likely to meet the right people if you know who you are looking for.
- Robbie: For virtual, be the person who shares the takeaways in chat. Share the resources the speaker mentions.
- Daniel: You are not building a relationship in a large room, you are only building in groups of two and three.
- Deb: Make sure your digital presence matches your in-person persona.
Building Your Network #GoalChatLive
Goals
- Claire: Write down 5 activities you are investing your time in that can be networking activities.
- Daniel: Reflect on how much joy it brings you to make connections for others. Use that to give yourself permission to ask for what you need.
- Robbie: Go to SmallListBigResults.com to help you zero in your networking efforts and hone in on who your people are.
Final Thoughts
- Daniel: Change your activities if you want to change your results.
- Claire: Have fun with it.
- Robbie: Be the croissant.
