Human Connection with Katelyn Carey, Janelle Moravek & Michael Neuendorff

On this week’s GoalChat, I brought together Katelyn Carey, RN, nurse educator, and trauma communication specialist; Janelle Moravek, executive director, Youth & Family Counseling, and Michael Neuendorff, president, Bay Area Executive Coach, for a conversation about human connection and communication.

Human connection sounds simple. We all want it, we need it, and yet sometimes it feels harder than ever to make it happen. The panel talked about what it takes to build stronger relationships, how to navigate and diffuse difficult conversations, and how to be better at “peopling” through the holiday season and beyond.

Define Human Connection

  • Katelyn: A balance between the science and the experience
  • Michael: Being willing to be vulnerable and genuinely interested in other people
  • Janelle: It’s the ability to communicate verbally and non-verbally

For Better Connections

  • Michael: Start with empathy
  • Janelle: Management of self
  • Katelyn: Replace empathy with curiosity
  • Michael: Ask questions, be curious
  • Janelle: Maker sure you have enough bandwidth
  • Katelyn: Be patient and be kind

Human Connection #GoalChatLive

Goals

  • Katelyn: Go watch my blowfish TEDx talk
  • Michael: Start having one-on-ones with your direct reports, make them personal
  • Janelle: Move discomfort into comfort; when you feel uncomfortable, sit with the feeling, so you can understand it

Final Thoughts

  • Janelle: Keep going, keep trying, don’t give up
  • Michael: Meet ever act of unkindness with ten acts of kindness
  • Katelyn: Who we are is defined by who we are to others
