Podcasting for Podcasthon with Seth Goldstein, Shel Holtz & Kandas Rodarte

On this week’s GoalChat, we talked about Podcasting in celebration of Podcasthon with podcasters Seth Goldstein, Entrepreneur’s Enigma; Shel Holtz, For Immediate Release; and Kandas Rodarte, Gratitude Geek. All four of us are on the Marketing Podcast Network – Seth brought me in, I brought Kandas in, and Seth and Shel were at the start of MPN.

This is Podcasthon week (March 16 – 20). The world’s largest podcast charity initiative, podcasters globally raise awareness for charitable causes through their broadcasts. This episode is in support of the American Heart Association in loving memory of my mom, Arlene Leder, a heart attack survivor who lived nearly three decades after her first cardiac event. And who taught me everything I know about kindness, community, and amplifying the voices of others. Kandas is also participating, podcasting this week in support of the Susan G Koman foundation for breast cancer awareness.

Throughout the episode, the panel shared their origin stories and the evolutions of their podcasts … and podcasting, along with thoughts on developing community through podcasts, amplifying their visibility, and more.

The Power of Podcasting

  • Shel: The ability to share content with a niche audience
  • Seth: It lets anyone start a podcast. It allows everyone to have a say
  • Shel: There’s a serious connection to audio that you don’t get from another medium
  • Kandas: It’s the ability connect emotionally with your audience

Getting Started

  • Shel: Make a plan
  • Kandas: Not everyone needs to start a podcast; better to start out as a podcast guest for at least 10 shows first
  • Shel: Get a decent microphone
  • Seth: Wear headphones
  • Shel: Plan the format; make it familiar and consistent
  • Kandas: Build community

Goals

  • Kandas: Check out PodMatch or another matchmaking services to find quality shows and find 10 shows to be a guest on
  • Seth: Develop your pitch and listen to your friends’ shows, and then pitch your friends who have podcasts.
  • Shel: Listen to podcasts outside your areas of interest
  • Bonus: Do 1 big reach ask a week

Final Thoughts

  • Kandas: You do not have to do this alone – ask someone who is already doing it; that applies to everything
  • Seth: Just start anything you want
  • Shel: Throw out your first three episodes; record them, but you don’t need to post them
