Marketing with Karlyn Ankrom, Kevin Chung & Rob Lange

On this episode of GoalChat, I had a fun conversation about marketing with Karlyn Ankrom, Oh Snap! Social; Kevin Chung, The Standout Creatives; and Rob Lange aka The Expert Expert. Karlyn’s specialty is post-publication social media, Kevin’s is email marketing, and Rob’s is getting media. They each cover a different element of marketing – all are intertwined.

The trio talked about the “fun” of marketing, along with essential first steps, what people get wrong, and more.

Define Marketing

  • Karlyn: Being visible so people can find you; otherwise you don’t exist to the masses
  • Kevin: It’s often confused with sales, which is “push-centric.” It’s connecting with people by sharing who you are
  • Rob: Getting yourself out there so people know what you do; people confuse it with sales and public relations. PR is someone saying things about you, marketing is you sharing it

Biggest Marketing Mistakes

  • Rob: People lack clarity; you need to separate what’s in your head – who you are, what you do, how you help – from what info actually needs to be out there
  • Karlyn: Thinking you are going to go viral tomorrow; show up as you truly are, stop comparison-itis, silence the imposter monster
  • Kevin: Something can go viral, but how many of those people will continue to follow you?
  • Kevin: Not knowing your audince: Stop trying to talk to everyone; pretend you are talking to a specific person

Goals

  • Kevin: Find the specific person you want to talk to, and write an email like it’s to a friend. That will help you create targeted messaging
  • Karlyn: Take a podcast interview and create a 30-second video and share it on social
  • Rob: Start with the outcome in mind. Then figure out how to get there.

Final Thoughts

  • Rob: Find what works for you and run with it
  • Kevin: Understand what you are doing, why, and how it best relates to the people you want to connect with; share how what you do helps them, connect with them, and get them engaged
  • Karlyn: Marketing gets to be the fun part of business; have more fun!
